There are places that draw us, like the Tower of London for its historical significance, the buildings of Frank Lloyd Wright for their manmade beauty and South Dakota’s Bad Lands for their amazing natural splendor. We are drawn to Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill for all three reasons.
Driving across Kentucky on Highway 68, we can feel Shaker Village before we arrive. We begin to shed the hustle and bustle and the stresses of daily life, even before we reach the property. As we cross onto the property we feel our shoulders relax and the pace of life slow. The peace that is Shaker Village welcomes us.
Our first visit to Shaker Village took my breath away and brought tears to my eyes, and it still does the same nearly 30 years and many visits later. Just like on our first visit, we tour, hike, enjoy nature, meet new people, stroll, eat, learn, relax and enjoy the hospitality of the staff. We recognize that although the Shakers held many beliefs that we do not, what they have left behind at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill speaks to us even today.
Each time we leave, there is another tear and a pause to memorize the place and feeling. We then return to the world, renewed and planning our next visit to Shaker Village.
