In the spring of 1973, my wife and I were looking for a getaway and through a newspaper article discovered Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill. We have been visiting there regularly ever since.
The rural atmosphere that surrounds the village automatically tells us that we will enjoy a relaxing outing, whether it be for a night or two or for an entire week. When inside the village we admire the carefully restored Shaker built structures, the historic furniture and informative displays inside them, and the superb meals served in the Trustee’s Office Dining Room.
During our winter visits, we particularly enjoy staying overnight in the Trustees' Office where we are close to the dining room on the first floor; thus we would not have to walk outdoors should a severe winter storm hit the village. We would continue to enjoy warm comfort and all that great food. But, we have had only light snow falls during our many such visits. We also enjoy walking throughout the village, savoring what it must have been like when the Shakers kept busy there year around, indoors and out.
In these modern times, employees and volunteers - most in Shaker garb - reenact those former years while also extending warm southern greetings and assistance as needed, while farm animals quietly graze in nearby fenced-in yards. What a marvelous way for us to relax and enjoy the village.
