Ever since my first visit to Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill in 1986, it has been my favorite place in the U.S. Why do I desire to repeatedly return?
First and foremost it is the oft-heard description attached to the village - its serenity and tranquility. Especially after the day visitors have left and one walks the lantern-lit paths at dusk, anticipating a comfortable overnight stay in one of the restored Shaker buildings.
It is also the beautiful simplicity of the architecture, the furnishings, the lifestyle and traditions. These are all brought to life by the interpreters who accurately portray life as it was at Pleasant Hill. More than most any place in the U.S. Shaker Village is a magical world of its own, set apart from the hectic pace or our 21st century culture. It refreshes the soul.
